THETAN

The being, not the body or name, the physical universe, his mind or anything else. That which is aware of being aware, the identity that IS the individual. (From Theta 8, the Greek symbol for "thought" or perhaps "spirit".)

Usage

In Scientology, when one refers to the thetan, they mean the being itself, not the body, the name, the mind, or anything in the physical universe. The thetan is that which is aware of being aware.

Why It Matters

Understanding that the thetan is the identity that IS the individual is foundational to Scientology, as all auditing and training is directed at improving the ability and awareness of the thetan, not merely the body or mind.
