BEEP METER
An early meter built by Volney Mathison, one of the first Dianeticists, to find sore spots for chiropractors. Touch the electrode to a painful place on the body and the machine beeps; move it an inch away and it does not. It was the forerunner of the E-Meter.

Usage
Experiments with the beep meter showed something nobody expected: a person who had had processing could stand ten or twenty feet away and make the meter beep at will, while someone who had not been audited could not. One person held the electrode and another, across the room, closed the circuit.
Why It Matters
The beep meter is where the instrument used in auditing today began. Its early results also gave a first practical hint that a person is not simply his body.
