BEINGNESS

The assumption or choosing of a category of identity. Beingness is assumed by oneself or given to oneself or is attained. Examples of beingness would be one's own name, one's profession, one's physical characteristics, one's role in a game- each and all of these things could be called one's beingness. Granting beingness means to grant to something - to permit or allow other people to have beingness.

Usage

A person's beingness includes his name, his profession, his physical characteristics, and his role in a game — any identity he has assumed, been given, or attained. Granting beingness to others means permitting them to have and express their own identity.

Why It Matters

Beingness is fundamental to how a person participates in life, since every activity involves assuming some identity or role. The ability to grant beingness to others is a measure of one's own spiritual health and tolerance.
