EMOTIONAL TONE SCALE

A scale of emotional tones or states which range from death at the bottom, up through apathy, grief, fear, covert hostility, anger, antagonism, boredom, conservatism to serenity of beingness at the very top. These tones also have harmonics of one another, similar to a musical scale does in the audio spectrum, as one moves up or down the tone scale.

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

By observing a person's behavior and emotional state, one can place them on the Emotional Tone Scale — for example, a person stuck in apathy would be near the bottom, while someone in a state of serenity of beingness would be at the top. The scale is used in auditing to track changes in the preclear's emotional tone as they move upward through processing.

Why It Matters

The Emotional Tone Scale provides a precise way to measure and predict human behavior based on emotional state. Moving a person higher on the scale through auditing corresponds to greater rationality, ability, and survival potential.
