FREE NEEDLE (FLOATING NEEDLE)
From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.
Usage
When the auditor observes a free needle on the E-Meter — a needle moving in an idle, uninfluenced motion that appears to float — and good indicators are present, this signals that the preclear has reached the end point of the process being run. The auditor then ends the process immediately.
Why It Matters
The free needle is one of the most important E-Meter phenomena in auditing because it provides a precise, observable indicator that a process is complete. Recognizing and correctly responding to a free needle ensures proper session management and protects the preclear's gains.
