DIRTY NEEDLE

An E-Meter needle that jerks, ticks and behaves raggedly instead of moving smoothly, and keeps on doing it. There are only three things that cause it: the auditor's handling is poor, the auditor is breaking the Auditor's Code, or the person has something he is not saying.

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

An auditor who sees a dirty needle does not carry on and hope; he looks at those three causes in turn. Most often it is a withhold, and once it is told the needle cleans up.

Why It Matters

The meter is honest about what is going on in the session, including about the auditor. A dirty needle is a signal to stop and find out why, not something to audit through.
