ARC

A acronym made from the initial letters of Affinity, Reality and Communication, which together equate to understanding. (These are the three things necessary to the understanding of something- A being has to have some affinity for it, it has to be real to some degree, and at least some communication is needed with it before it can be understood.)

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

When a person has affinity for a subject, finds it real, and can communicate about it, they have ARC with that subject and therefore understand it. If any one of these three components is missing, understanding of that subject breaks down.

Why It Matters

ARC is a foundational principle in Scientology because it provides a practical formula for understanding. By improving affinity, reality, or communication with any person or subject, one directly increases understanding of it.

Related Concepts

  • COMMUNICATIONThe interchange of ideas or objects between two people or terminals.
  • AFFINITYDegree of liking or affection or lack of it.
