ANATEN

An abbreviation of "analytical attenuation", meaning a diminution or weakening of the analytical awareness of an individual for a brief or extensive period of time. If sufficiently great, it can result in unconsciousness. (It stems from the re-stimulation of an engram which contains pain and unconsciousness.)

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

A student who suddenly becomes drowsy or foggy while studying may be experiencing anaten caused by restimulation of an engram containing pain and unconsciousness. In auditing, a preclear going into anaten signals that a heavily charged engram has been restimulated.

Why It Matters

Anaten is important to recognize because it indicates a weakening of analytical awareness caused by restimulation of engrams. Identifying and addressing the engram behind an episode of anaten is a key part of auditing progress.
