APPARENCY

The way someone or something appears to be, where this is different from the way that they actually are.

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

An apparency exists when a situation appears to be one thing on the surface but is actually something quite different underneath. In an investigation, distinguishing apparencies from actual facts is critical to finding the real source of a problem.

Why It Matters

Recognizing apparencies is important in Scientology because acting on how things appear rather than how they actually are leads to wrong conclusions and ineffective handling. Auditing and administrative work both require looking past apparencies to find what is actually true.
