PERSONAL EFFICIENCY COURSE
An early introductory course, given over five evenings, on which people new to the subject learned the fundamentals. Its whole purpose was to explain the basics in plain terms to people who had not met them before. Also called the Personnel Efficiency Course, and usually shortened to the PE Course.
From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.
Usage
A person who had read a book and wanted to know more would typically start on the PE Course, one evening a week for five weeks. Its curriculum was laid down exactly rather than left to whoever was teaching it.
Why It Matters
For many years this was the front door: the first place most people actually met the subject in person. Field auditors ran PE Courses as a matter of course.
