STUDENT HAT
A course that teaches a person how to study. It covers how to clear a word, how to check somebody out on material, and how to demonstrate an idea so it is understood rather than merely read. It gives a person the tools to study anything at all.

Usage
A student who keeps losing interest partway through a book usually has not been taught how to study, only what to study. The Student Hat handles that, and it is the prerequisite for the auditor training courses.
Why It Matters
Being taught how to study is unusual, and it turns out to be the thing that decides whether anything else takes. The skills apply to any subject, not only this one.

- HAT — Slang for the title and work of a post in a Scientology Organization; taken from the fact that in many professions, such as railroading, the type of hat worn is the badge of the' job.
- WORD CLEARING — The procedures used to find and clear up the words a person did not understand in what he has been studying.
- MISUNDERSTOOD WORD — A word a person did not understand, or understood wrongly, and went past anyway.
- LOCK WORDS — Words that are not in the GPMs, but which are close in meaning to significances that are part of the GPMs.
