OTHER-DETERMINISM

The condition of having one's actions or conclusions determined by something or someone other than oneself.

From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.

Usage

A person under other-determinism has their actions or conclusions determined by something or someone other than themselves. For example, someone who only acts based on what others tell them to do, without any self-determined decision, is in a state of other-determinism.

Why It Matters

Recognizing other-determinism is important because spiritual progress in Scientology involves increasing a person's self-determinism. Understanding when one's actions are being determined by outside forces is a first step toward regaining one's own cause over life.
