Hi, and welcome to another Scientology Outside of the Church podcast. This is season fourteen, episode nine of our continuing series after our two hundred and fiftyth episode. And this one is entitled The Door to Learning, Study Tech, 1964. It's been a while. We've been really busy, and we are going to continue with this series. We're getting close to wrapping things up, and we're glad to be back here with you. So let's get started. If you will recall, we were talking about a dinner in the last episode before the 250th episode with LRH's RJ series of uh recordings. So Where this leads to right now is the most advanced course in the world. Okay. And at this point on the briefing course in 1964, uh LRH really uh turned a corner on the world of study and how people could learn. And this is going to be all about that and the connections forthwith. So on the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course, uh LRH says, all right, the situation with regard to auditing depends on the subject. called study. If you can't learn anything, why then can't you find out how to do anything? And this is from Saint Hill Special Briefing Course three eighty seven, eighteenth june, nineteen sixty four. He also said study operates as the door open or closed to learning how to audit. And that is so true, but it's not just auditing, it's life. And uh the student hat, which didn't exist at the time, uh and later on was released, is probably the most important course ever. Uh Pro TRs Comes Next, which was released in 1981. But knowing how to learn is super important. I think you guys will really find this to be an interesting podcast. Now remember the student reaching for the dictionary that we talked about in our first episode. This is where all of this comes from. And We're gonna get going on this and uh tell the top auditors that their bottleneck is knowing how to study is how we're gonna lead off on this. And you'll see how many connections we connect in this episode. Every check sheet since, including this episode's, walk straight through the doors that we've come through since episode one. So then the question is why nineteen sixty-four? Like what was happening that year? Maybe Jonathan, you have a bit more on that. Well what did it come down to is is LRH with everything that was on the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course, this was all um research and discovery work. And what he'd been running into since 1961 is how in the hell do you get people to understand what it is I'm trying to teach them? I'm sure he said to himself. Knowing him as I did at the time, um that that that is w where all of this came from. And he was having a really hard time. This is this is in the last couple years of the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course. So it it's you've got this technology, but getting people to understand it, there's something going on here. What's happening. So That's where this all came from, is because so many people were coming from all over the planet trying to learn how to audit goals, problems, mass, and all these different uh research auditing line processes. And they were having a lot of difficulty with it, but there's an interesting dovetail that comes in here a little later on on how these things cross over and the tweens. Shall meet it. I see. So I guess that's where we get the way our classrooms are now, with uh check sheets and uh dictionaries and all of that stuff. But then it didn't exist. Yeah Yeah it did it yeah Yeah check sheets didn't and and and this is something a lot of people that that that are listening don't know they didn't have check sheets on the briefing course check sheets came after this after this this period that we're going to be talking about here in this podcast they didn't exist word clearing didn't exist It's quite interesting. Word clearing on a meter didn't exist, but a meter did. Right. And I think we kind of take it for granted that like this is just the way you do things, but can you imagine going through all this and not having any of those things in place to help you get through your courses? Jeez, Louise. Oh yeah. I guess then the question I want to ask is who were the Berners? Okay, so this leads us to a particular gentleman whose name was Charles Berner. And this is somebody that LRH knew. And um he was a guy who had come up with some ideas on study. And Charles Berner was an early Scientologist from California who studied at Saint Hill and his wife was Ava. Okay. And so they knew each other and there were letters that were sent back and forth, maybe a telex or two. Um I was around and Quenton was there as well. Uh we've talked about this outside of the podcast and everything, but Quenton was a kid and I was an adult. So you're just gonna have to believe us on this because this is past lifetime stuff. And um it was a very, very interesting time, and uh the Berners had Something to do with what would later be study tech. And things got interesting from there. We'll just leave it at that is all we'll talk about on it uh out of respect for these people, but it wasn't as harmonious as one would have hoped. But we still got the the study tech out of it and they were acknowledged at the time. So And we and we have record. I mean, we have record on where Study Tech came from. And uh in in actually uh keeping Scientology working, the write-up, uh LRH says, he says our technology has not been discovered by a group. And he did talk about people and name people who helped out. He said they helped in forms of friendship and forms of defense uh of the tech. of organization and helping to organize the tech, of disseminating the tech, of app applying the tech, and so and even advice on results and on finance lines. So these were great contributions per LRH. So we actually have record that this tech was actually developed by LRH and pulled together with the help of so many people They help bring this all together. And so this is really good stuff. Uh, what I will say is that also, too, when we get further into this, we're gonna really see how each contribution actually led to more and more and more coming up uh with this technology, and this technology is really a game changer. Because, like I said before, like to not have Study Tech, to not have uh being able to clear words and knowing. clearing words as a real phenomena, like that could be a real big mess. When you're trying to get through some of this tech. And uh also, um this is from eighteenth of June nineteen sixty-four, which is keeping Scientology working basically. Our technology has not been discovered by a group, and it names how others did help. Help in the form of friendship, of defense, of organization, of dissemination, of application, of advice is on results of and of finance. These were great contribution. Uh And this is what LRH says in keeping Scientology working, which is 7 February, 1965, a few months earlier. But that's that's the whole idea is these are all connections, and this goes all the way back to our subsets podcasts and how all of these things join together. This is just like Gautama Siddhartha, just like uh Korzybski can't uh A cigar is just a cigar and all of the psychiatric subs and connections are all coming together now here, but with study tech. And all of this joins together, and then you have the meter also on it as well. So where does this come to? Well, this is where it gets interesting in 1964. The three barriers to study. And this this is this is the culmination of the study tech. All right. LRH realized through all of this uh distillation that there were three barriers to study. You have your misunderstood word, you have your skipp gradients or a correct gradient, and then you also have mass or the lack thereof. Those are the three barriers to study. And these were the three fundamental, primary and most important discoveries. on planet earth that nobody had ever distilled and put together. You still see it today, the lack thereof in non-scientology, independent Scientology circles. And this guy distilled all this stuff down and put it on one page. One page, you can actually distill it down to that. I'm looking at it right now. And with these three barriers, especially the misunderstood word, which we've talked about ad nauseum in our podcasts and is in the materials, the that fundamental barrier to study is almost how the entire grade chart came together and that is the foundation of it. The only thing that is below that as a subset is the actual axioms themselves, which one of them is axiom 38. Quenton, do you remember it verbatim by chance? Um is that the no topics form an event? That's that's the time, place, form, and event. Stupidity is I'll give you a hint. Stupidity is uh unknown consideration. Stupidity unknownness of consideration. That's right, yes. Unknownness consideration. Right. Right and when when that is opened up you and you get proper time place form and event, you have an as isness. And when you don't understand a word, you have Per axiom 11 and altar isness. And that creates mass, which creates stupidity and unknowingness. Okay. So that's the subset beneath this particular barrier of the misunderstood word. And above that is your overt, which is When you write up an overt, time, place, form, and event, you get in as isness. Below that is the misunderstood word that caused you to commit an overt in that area because you had a motivator. Okay, and that goes back to study tech. Okay. Wow. So you we want to blow blow the course because from the ethic standpoint, you don't want to harm that area. So I must leave. This course sucks. Yeah. I mean that's yeah there isn't there isn't anybody anybody listening to this podcast or not on planet Earth who hasn't experienced that and this was put this was put on one bulletin Why am I studying this? All right. that can be put on one page in a few sentences. That's how key this barrier to study is. Okay? All this is in the study tech and all of this makes up the bridge. Connections, subsets, loops. This was in nineteen sixty four. So LRH says, and he literally says this, this is from Stan Study Gradients and Nomenclature, 16, uh, 6 August, excuse me, 6 August 1964. SHSBC 397 again. He says, Well now the only place you can air in this area, ERR. air in this area is trying to start in too high on the gradient. And you can make that mistake, and you can make that mistake with the greatest of ease. This is going to sound familiar to an awful lot of our listeners, because the anybody that's done student hat has listened to this. It's the easiest mistake to make because nothing else is done in the modern university except make this mistake. They don't educate. They make that mistake. Modern education is really the art and science of making the mistake of too steep, too quick, before anybody has learnt anything about it. And that's one of the other study. Barriers is too steep of a gradient. So where does this lead us? Yeah. I mean you're talking about university, and I remember so clearly vividly, first um time it was a lecture on chemistry, and we're sitting at this lecture hall. Lecturer just goes, takes the book, and he reads the first chapter. He's reading, reading, reading, reading like Uh two thirds out, time runs out. It's 45 minutes. End of the and end of the lecture. And it's like, okay, this is where we're gonna end off. Study the rest of chapter one, read chapter two, and chapter three. Tomorrow we'll be doing chapter four. I'm like, what? And he comes in the following day, so chapter four. I'm like, what just happened? So now I have chemistry that I've I've never seen. So it's lack of mass. I don't have the thing. I have skip gradient, there's like two chapters and and a third that I have no idea what just happened. And then there's misunderstood words galore. That was my introduction into university. See it and my well say this quick, because my my dad Now I I wonder if my dad was a Scientologist or had looked into Scientology, because one of the biggest things in our house is we spent a lot of money on encyclopedias and dictionaries and all of the um my parents bought us the visual encyclopedia. So it was All of the encyclopedia volumes, but broken down into small little uh packets, not packets, but books. But they were visual. They and so they had the math in there and the words. And then um I remember my dad got me a gift. He bought my brother a basketball, and he got me a dictionary, a thesaurus, and etymology thing. And I'm like And now at the time I was like, oh wow. But then my brothers went outside and started playing, and I'm sitting here reading the Thesaurus. Yeah. And I'm like, okay, you know something I don't know. My dad was my dad was an engineer. I'm like, you know something I don't know. So I was reading thesaurus as while they was outside playing basketball. Go figure. That's so much fun. Funny you should say that though. I actually still have a set of the Encyclopedia Britannica. And it's in it's in the it's in the living room. Yeah at home. My dad had that. Anyway Now then there's the third barrier, uh, which is where the thought from episode three finally pays off. This was the word from Korzybski's loop closes. Now You're looking at um 13 years from the word is not the thing. Now this is from like way back on the CVs. This is what we're talking about, though. They misunderstood. And back in episode three, we said to hold a thought about Korzybski, you can go back and check that out. Now this is where it lands. This is from study now here's from study and education a lecture study and education 13 August 1964. That's SHSBC 399. It's also in the tech volume. Uh seven, page four fifty three. He says the misunderstood word, and that produces such a vast paner panorama, panorama of mental effects that it its fa itself is the prime factor involved with stupidity. Mm-hmm. Which I mentioned earlier, stupidity and the axiom. There you go. Connections. And then from the logics, uh the lecture on the logics from the 8th of October 1951. He says, where general semantic semantics applies to Dianetics. This was before Scientology as a subject. Since where general semantics applies to dianetics is it's a shadow background to the existing axioms on logic, not on thought. So this thing of the the word um if you don't have the word you don't have the word it messes you up and it goes very deep. So when Jonathan speaks about the misunderstood word where it fits in a person's aberration It just makes so much more sense. But yeah, a word is not just a word. Yeah. Hmm. Because be because a word is a blocker because that hangs hangs up a person in the axioms and creates Hmm. Timelessness. Let me repeat that. Yeah. I'm gonna do it Quenton here. Hear me. Hear me. It it you you look at the bridge and you go, there's all this stuff and all this. Technology. But it all goes back to the axioms because when you have timeless and you you don't know or understand something, it stops you. It is it it literally it is and and I and I have to say this, it literally is also under what an engram is. Okay, because We've talked about this before and LRH talks about it in the tech, and this is the tech that we're talking about here. All of these things earlier, when he was researching dianetics, he didn't know those connections himself. And when you have a misunderstood word, you start to, and I said this earlier, which LRH states, around this period on overts and withholds in the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course, when you and and in policy and in tech, and it's here in the barriers to study. You get stuck on the time track because you don't know something. You don't understand it. So you look for a motivator, which is part of the first and second phenomena of a misunderstood word. The motivator that you pull in is the engram you receive. Hear me on this. So you see how this works? Because at the time LRH was researching d dianetics and not Scientology. He didn't know this himself, but he figured it out just right before 1964 in Barriers to Study, where he put it all together and all of those connections. made a nice tiny little bow. And so if you find the misunderstood word beneath an engram, you can literally do this in session. You find the misunderstood word, then that ngram will blow. Now get this. That misunderstood word caused you to make a postulate. That postulate was wrong. Why? Because you had a misunderstood word. Because it was misunderstood. Yeah. Think about that. She'm thinking I'm thinking. Yeah. You had a Go ahead. I'm thinking method one the the the crazy amount of charge I blew on method one and method one is just word clearing the whole color like it's subjects you work here work clear and you've I was finding words and languages that I can even know and but it was there oh my god Yeah. Right. Right. And and you right. Right. Right. You're going whole track on this, and you're you're literally taking out the foundational polls on a subject that has led you down a path of overts, withholds. engrams, motivators, and everything, but you're clearing the misunderstood words beneath it. And so the all the charge that you you had come off was because you were you were undercutting all of that other grade chart activity that you would do and how fundamental it is and why it works and shows up on the meter and words read on a meter when you misunderstand them is because that read is that foundation and everything above it falls like a stack of dominoes. You just don't spot it yet. And and and it's this this could also be words, concepts, and phrases, is that correct. Well it it's it yeah it's it's it's a a word a concept or phrase because just you if you're not if you're not reading it okay and then this is important because we have to to identify and differentiate this. A word on a page is a stimulator. Mm-hmm. You don't go through life just seeing words. You see significances. Okay. You you have things that that are activities that happen. There isn't a transcript running under like on Netflix, you know, or a foreign or a foreign movie that is saying this stuff to you. But the thing is how these correlate in the reactive mind. You see where this heads? Because a a dump truck, a baseball bat, a dog, uh an image of anything that you create is something you store in the reactive mind. That is still a misunderstood. but it correlates back and connects to words that you misunderstood before, not what's going on now, what happened in the past, because that's the earlier similar. That's Scientology. Dianetics is earlier incident. Let me let me say and I've talked about this on a previous podcast because um I was in a car accident some time ago. This is just an anecdotal story. I was in a car accident some time ago and um I was my grandmother was driving and a drunk driver hit us from the back the back. And our car, you know, goes forward and everything, and I was in the back seat. And so I took the brunt of a lot of that impact. Anyway, my cousin, she saw the accident because we weren't far from the house, and she runs down and she's running and she's pointing at the guy. I'm in the back seat of the car, and she goes, He ain't even stop. He ain't even stop. And I was I was like 14 years old. And 615, I get my my uh permit, 16 I get my driver's license. And within three weeks of getting my driver's license, I get into a car accident because I ain't even stop. Like I didn't I literally I saw the car in front of me but I did not even apply the brakes I just kept going boom hit the car in front of me about a year later I get into another car accident guess what I ain't even stop Shit. You know, I wrecked three cars with that one. And it wasn't until years later my my my uh my twin that was running dianetics with me, we were co-auditing dianetics, and I pull up this incident for this car accident, and I keep going on this thing, and I ain't even stop. And I misunderstood who she was talking about. I'm creating all these overs. Boom, boom, boom. You know, messing up people. Mm-hmm. I really I messed up a person brand new Mercedes. I remember this like, and we had to pay for that. Oh my gosh. My mother was so mad. Yeah. And this this rolls back to what he says in 1951 and what I was saying about images, significances versus symbols. And he says again in the logic lecture. that that Simphiwe was crediting. Where general semantics applies to dianetics is it's a shadow background to these existing axioms on logic, not on thought, which goes right to what your point was, Quenton, was it was an ill logical postulate. Right. So that's how all this ties together in in the connections at this point in 1964. And that's kind of a ladder, in other words, to what follows. Yeah. Yeah, it's an interesting chain. I mean you have 1933, Korzybski Science and Sanity talking about the word is not a thing. 1951, LRH places the general semantics as a shadow. A share of back the background that's uh to the XM, what what Jonathan just spoke about. 1964 in the Saint Hill Briefing Course. Now he's talking about study. Now study the study line find a word taken wrongly or taken at or not taken at all, cuts the student off from the subject, and then he creates. uh word clearing tank which now builds the repair like fixing this whole thing and in 2026 episode one through this connection series if a student reaches for the dictionary this is intense Um yeah. I love it. So, but it's beautiful though because suddenly stupidity in all its forms is something that can be fixed. It's not a fixed treat. Right. Right. And how it came around is he was trying to train these auditors on the briefing course and going, you know, WTF, what the hell is going on here? Yeah. Why can't why can't they get this and why can't they do what it is I'm asking them to do? Now it it also it also goes back to the earlier connection and i talked to i talked to Quenton i don't know if you were on the call Simphiwe i think you can you came on earlier uh you came on later where basically how lrh came up with all of this technology and i've never said this on a podcast before this is my own cognition realization epiphany for those that aren't scientologists listening lrh was a writer a very very very prolific writer And what a story consists of is two things. Those two things are you have your hero, you have your anti-hero. Okay you can't have a story without those two components. Name one story where that doesn't exist. It's not a story. Is that a story? Okay. Now here's where it gets really interesting. Okay. You know, you've heard the expression art imitates life. It's actually the opposite. When you write a story, you are looking at, and this comes back up to the Saint Yeah. Hill Special Briefing Course, and how he figured this out as a connection, because as an author, he understood that there was a hero and an anti-hero. And you have every story has to have that. And he understood the English language so well because he he'd put in 10, 20,000, probably thirty just writing. And he knew the English language so well. because of this, because you have to know the English language in order to write well. And then he had these hero and anti-hero. And you bring that back up to the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course. And all through the 50s in dianetics and everything else, he realized what a hero and an anti-her. Goals, problems, mass Because you have two opposing terminals. It's a two-terminal universe. This goes back to the axioms. Okay. You see how all of these subsets, loops and connections come together throughout all of this. Everything he read about Korzybski, Kant, um. uh young and who who's who's the other one uh cigar is just a cigar uh freud okay so you have all of these building and building and building he gets on the briefing course and he's trying to teach these students about goals problems maths the pre having the scale that we talked about that is pages and pages and pages and pages long, which each one of those subsets and the pre havingness scale is the scale between one tone level and another. If you listen back to the earlier podcasts in this series. Because he understood every single one of those words and was actually able to take each word and put it into a micro scale of that subset between each tone level. So you see how this all progressed, and he's like, why can't they do this? Why can't they do this? Why don't they understand this? And he was like, Oh my god, they don't know these words. And he understood the goals, problems, mass, and he's trying to show how these tone levels behave because they've got some stuck unknownness, some stupidity on their own personal track that is a misunderstood word, a motivator. An engram you see that. Right. Well, yeah, and if you think about in most stories in most movies or whatever, in most stories, the villain is somebody who misunderstood something. Like the way they that concept that Thanos, he wanted to he wanted to heal the universe, but he misunderstood how to do it. By by killing half of all life Yeah, even Dark Dark Side Yupes, I'm gonna be able to get a lot of the Right. And that goes that goes to PTSSP technology, too. Why is it why why isn't why does an SP get stuck on the track? Because he's pulling in the the motivator of all motivators, and he's trying to what? Stop it. And so he becomes a suppressive and continues to try and stop it because he's pulled in a motivator. Stop it. earlier on that's re-stimulated in that lifetime and that goes back on the track to a basic misunderstood word I hope everybody's following this if you need to do a demo do a demo or do a clay demo with it which is part of the study tech folks Yep. Yep. Yep. Exactly. Do the hat. You gotta do clear demo. Because if If you go back, these misunderstood words, concepts, and phrases is going to lead to that kind of so we we really need to do a whole podcast called Don't Stay Stupid. That's nice. Right, right, right. But you know, and the and that's the definition of Scientology that came up in 1952, knowing how to know. Yeah. So important. Wow. So that brings us back to the ladder. Well Yeah, exactly. Because I was gonna say because because what we what we then have here is this uh set of lectures that turns into a course room. Well well basically we have these lectures. The LRH did 1964 study lectures and the word clearing series, right? And that then becomes the basic study manual, and that's actually the volume of all the information where you can actually study this stuff, which is now we also have the student head as well. But all of these things built a ladder of understanding, right? And as they go up, we we see from these lectures. Or the discovery, then these lectures, the basic study manual, student hat, and really this focus on literacy. And what I'll say to this is that one thing I love and appreciate about Scientology is that there is a strong focus on literacy. And making sure you know and understand what you're reading, you understand what is being uh discussed and talked about, you understand because so many ARC breaks, we didn't talk about that yet, Jonathan. So many ARC breaks come from misunderstanding. Well, not in this podcast. Right, right, yeah, I'm telling you, man, like and so all of this stuff is so important, and so. It it LRH was the great distiller of information to where all of this information can be distilled down to something as simple as lack of mass, too steep a gradient, and misunderstood words. And there's so much beyond that. But when we when we look at the codification of it and this ladder that was created, we really can see how you go from the high to the low, all the way down to these three principles, and all the way back up, and all the other things that it impacts when you don't have these things clear. So I think it's really important to see how that progression up and down the ladder makes sense. It's incredible. Like you take any course that we have It has a check sheet. The check sheet is like you read this, you start, you do this exercise, you do this MO, you do this clay, whatever actions you're doing, you're gaining a skill, a full understanding, and a skill and uh and an ability to actually do the thing, whatever it is. But if you trace it back, it goes back to a lecture somewhere, LRH was actually solving a problem he was having in front of a miscellaneo student. He has to teach them how to audit. There's a skill they need to get and they can't get it. So he figures it out. And it distills all of those discoveries, it distills it now. You can take this and use it in your understanding how to build a bridge, how to uh learn how to take proper photographs, how to sing better, how to play the drum, the whole thing, it just applies everywhere. Right. All from the Now all from this lecture. Now one can say what happened to the Berners. Okay. Now here's the here's the irony based off of this entire podcast conversation. I know where you're going. I know exactly where you're gonna go with You you ready? You ready for this? I'm ready. Let's hear it. I know where you're going. I'm ready. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's hear it. So Charles Berner, who helped LRH with some of his his discoveries, and they were distilled down by LRH into the study tech in Scientology. In the mid-60s, Charles Berner left Scientology. He blew Mm-hmm. Oh. You don't say good word. Okay. And what happens what happens in the study tech that causes a person to blow? A misunderstood concept, word, or symbol. Mm-hmm. It's that simple. And and and this this distinction needs to be made by us here and me and in even Charles Berner and LRH and all the people that we've mentioned in this podcast is It's one thing to discover it, it's another thing to apply it. And that's the most important thing about dianetics, Scientology, the axioms, and everything else is you can know everything, but if you don't apply it, and you can't apply what it is that you've either discovered or learned, what have you got? Yeah. That's pretty profound. It is it is not a little bit more. So in closing nearly eight months later. Nearly eight months later. We have February 1965. And we'll take this up in our next podcast. And we already mentioned that earlier in our discussion here. And this this is where we tie up all of the connections for the most part. So I hope our listeners have been able to keep up on this and it's all in the tech and the grade chart and the axioms and all of our prior podcast that detail LRH's journey and the ones that came before him. And it is a very long, long line of connections just on this planet, let alone in this universe and the other universes that are detailed and you can have access to with training and auditing in Dianetics and Scientology. This is your story, not ours. Not LRH's. It's all of our stories. So we hope you've enjoyed this podcast and uh it's tied some things together in these connections, and we'll see you in our next episode. Namaste. And I wouldn't say Yeah. Go ahead. Well, I was gonna say, and I want to say thank you guys for this, because this is probably one of the longer this is the longest actually uh series that we've done. And it it really is breaking everything down so clearly so that as you're going through this series, you're also understanding, there's that word again, understanding how all of this stuff came together and how it's applicable to your journey up the bridge and so thank you for sticking on with us please comment below share comment subscribe uh all the things and like yeah all the things with youtube and then um we can't wait to see you next week i just want to say that before we go out Like Yep. And don't forget we still have our our T two two week free trial going on for the new website where you can Check all of this out. Come to Sunday services. Check out the knowledge base, listen to the lectures, have the transcripts there in front of you as they're playing along. Look up your words, research all of the things that we've been talking about, talk to Axiom AI and uh go on course with Klaatu and learn about this lineage yourself. and everything that we've put here for you all of our listeners and everyone on the planet with a body and without is fine with me too uh to get this data and apply it to yourself and your dynamics so hope you enjoyed it Namaste and we love you bye bye Peace.
