VALENCE
The unwitting assumption by one individual of the characteristics of another individual.
From the AOGP Abridged Scientology Dictionary — based on original LRH source materials, updated through 1982.
Usage
A person in a valence has unwittingly taken on the characteristics of someone else, such as adopting a parent's mannerisms, tone of voice, or attitudes without realizing it. This assumption of another's identity is not a conscious choice.
Why It Matters
Valences obscure a person's own identity and natural personality. Identifying and resolving valences in auditing helps a person recover their own characteristics and operate as themselves rather than as a copy of someone else.
