From Dianetics to Scientology: The Real History — Part I — Independent Scientology

We challenge the familiar public story that Dianetics came first and Scientology followed after. Drawing directly on L. Ron Hubbard's (LRH) own lectures, the hosts show that the research actually began around 1931, that the axioms grew out of a "summary of information" begun in November 1938, and that the word "Scientology" was named as early as 1938 — years before Book One, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, was published on 9 May 1950. The conversation follows that research line step by step. LRH's early work on the mind was interrupted by the Second World War and his Navy service, and handling his own physical injuries became the proving ground that produced the Original Thesis and, eventually, Dianetics. The hosts trace the loss and recovery of the Dianetics rights in Wichita, Kansas, and the pivotal shift from reducing the reactive mind (Dianetics) to increasing the alertness and ability of the being — the Thetan — which is the heart of Scientology, "the science of knowing how to know." Along the way they pack in concrete detail: LRH quoting himself across the Advanced Clinical Courses, the Philadelphia Doctorate Course, and the international congresses; the realization that the analytical mind was the Thetan; the principle that training is 50% of the gains; and even the very first e-meter — a Wheatstone-bridge device as big as a bread box — that later shrank into the Mark IV and Mark V. By 1957 the two subjects were formally separated so the technology could not be crossed, confused, or misapplied.
